Under the general direction of the Director of Editorial, Design, and Production (EDP), with independent judgment on matters of design, the Art Director: 1. Oversees the graphic design of all general-interest and academic projects produced by the New Haven office of Yale University Press--approximately 150 new projects and 50 paperback reprints annually. Ensures that jacket/cover and interior designs are consistent with publishing plans, meet aesthetic and conceptual requirements, and are completed on schedule and within budget. 2. Hires, trains, and supervises the in-house staff of the Design Department. Assigns, prioritizes, and art-directs their work. Stays abreast of design trends and publishing technology, investigating and implementing new tools where appropriate. 3. Develops and maintains pool of freelance designers. Hires and supervises freelance illustrators and photographers as needed. Conducts photo research. 4. Runs jacket design meetings to plan and assess jackets for trade books, collaborating closely with the Press Director, Sales Director, Marketing Director, and Acquisitions Editors. Ensures that jackets for lead trade titles are effective, appropriate, and completed on schedule. 5. Develops and updates format interior designs, template covers, and specifications for book series. As a designer, responsible for titles, designs and executes jackets and interiors, working closely with Acquisitions Editorial, Manuscript Editorial, and Production staff. 6. Assesses interior art files and provides technical guidance. Advises Acquisitions staff on art preparation. 7. Attends preproduction meetings, scheduling meetings, and launch meetings. Works closely with the Director of EDP, Managing Editor, and Production Manager to coordinate workflow, establish procedures, allocate resources and budgets, and implement strategic plans.
Preferred Education: 4 years' experience managing staff. Technological savvy, including the ability to embrace new developments and train others in their use. Experience with highly illustrated books, textbooks, scholarly editions, mathematical formulas, tabular material, and similarly complex content. Familiarity with eBook technology and formats (e.g., XML and ePub).

Experience with highly illustrated books, textbooks, scholarly editions, mathematical formulas, tabular material, and similarly complex content. Required Skill/ability 5: Excellent oral and written communication skills: ability to communicate design concepts to nondesigners, and convey detailed art direction to in-house and freelance staff. Substantial organizational skills, including time management, prioritization, and attention to detail.
