The 1st floor supervisor will oversee the 1st floor and share lower level oversight.
The 2nd floor supervisor will oversee the 2nd floor and share lower level oversight.
The Student Innovation Center is seeking qualified candidates for two part-time Shop Supervisors on the weekends who will provide leadership, supervision, customer service, and technical support in the following areas:
1st floor â Fabrication and assembly facilities in wood and metal working, including equipment such as jointers, planers, band saws, table saws, sanders, mills, drill presses, cutters, grinders, welders, lathes, etc., and also ancillary facilities, including the paint and finishing shop, collaboration corner, supply depot, and outdoor maker space.
2nd floor â Fabrication and assembly facilities in electronics, textiles, and 3D printing, including equipment such as soldering stations, power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, 3D printers, laser cutters, stitching machines, embroidery machines, looms, CNC knitting machines, etc., and also ancillary facilities, including the digital modeling and visualization lab and outdoor special projects area.
Lower level â Fabrication and assembly facilities in metal working, primarily supporting student organizations and clubs, including equipment such as mills, drill presses, band saws, welders, grinders, lathes, etc. and also ancillary facilities, including dynamometer testing, lunar testing, composites fabrication, and special projects area.Â The lower level is a shared responsibility between shop supervisors.
The Shop Supervisor will be an integral member of the newly established Student Innovation Center team. The position will have the opportunity to create engaging, welcoming workspaces and ensure safe, hands-on experiences. The person in this role will be in charge of shops, resources, and services in assigned areas, including: training students and maintaining records; managing and scheduling supplies, services, and equipment; operating, maintaining, repairing, and servicing tools and equipment; creating and implementing operational and safety procedures and standards; developing and delivering workshops and trainings; providing customer service; and managing student support personnel.Â This position also provides support to the other shop supervisor as well as building support.
The successful candidate is a self-starter, exhibits attention to detail, and has excellent project management, problem solving, and communication skills.Â The successful candidate also has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be the subject matter expert and operate all equipment in assigned areas.
The Student Innovation Center, opening in fall 2020, is the nexus on campus that inspires students, faculty, and staff to innovate through experimentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the free exchange of ideas in an inclusive environment.Â The center is a resource serving the entire university community with unique facilities and workspaces to foster innovation across all aspects of Iowa Stateâs land-grant mission. The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position. The duties and responsibilities of the posted position, in addition to compensation offered, will not be affected by this process.
