Summary: The Head of Woodcraft has as a primary responsibility the direction of the day-to-day operations of Woodcraft, including the supervision of the Woodcraft Assistant. Working in cooperation with the Director of Berea College Student Craft, the Head of Woodcraft ensures that students are inspired and engaged in the experiential nature of woodworking. As an active design and production environment, the Head of Woodcraft has responsibility for both student education in woodworking processes and managing necessary production schedules to meet customer demand/budgetary requirements. The Head of Woodcraft is expected to engage in hands-on production of both Woodcraft’s production line and special projects as a requirement of this position. The Head of Woodcraft understands and implements standard OSHA safety regulations and guides the safe flow of work. The Head of Woodcraft is responsible for all raw material, supply, equipment and purchase requisitions, as well as developing the knowledge to follow a TOC Supply buffer process. In association with the Director, the Head of Woodcraft meets with potential product clients and assists them in making choices related to materials, design and processes. The Head of Woodcraft is directly involved in the design of new items.
Minimum Qualifications Required: Education required to ensure success in this position: • Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, or Technology, or related field, preferred • MFA in Wood/Furniture preferred. Experience required to ensure success in this position: • 5-7 years’ experience in active wood/furniture studio or production shop work, minimum • 5+ years studio or production shop experience, with MFA in Wood/Furniture, preferred Summation of related education and/or experience will be considered. Special skills, knowledge and abilities: • Leadership abilities and good communication skills, knowledge of production studio methods, costing/product development & prototyping; experienced in furniture design and manufacturing techniques; experience will all types of woodworking machinery, tools and processes; understanding of OSHA and other safety guidelines. Candidates with experience computer-aided drafting and design preferred • Support for the College’s Great Commitments as well as the mission-aligned approaches in Student Craft. • Teaching experience in the workshop setting. Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum and move students through projects to completion.
License, certification, or registration necessary: • Valid Driver’s License
Physical requirements: • lifting in excess of 50 lbs. on a regular basis
Environmental conditions: • Constant dust and noise from woodworking equipment; eye; ear and dust protection necessary for many duties.
Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment: • Motor vehicles, fork lift, All woodworking machines including sanders, routers, lathes, morticers, planers, jointers, drills, saws and gluing/clamping equipment. Knowledge of/or ability to learn CNC machining and laser cutting/engraving.

Head of Woodcraft • Inspires, trains, evaluates and supervises student workers within the Woodcraft production area. • Primary responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of Woodcraft’s Production items including… • Required to manage monthly production schedules. • Prepares all supply and material requisitions • Follows OSHA guidelines for safety in workshop and ensures EPA records are kept daily • Assist with design, develop and prototype new products for production that align with and support the College’s Great Commitments • Works with clients on custom design and production for wood items/furniture • Required to engage in personal production as a part of overall monthly transfer. • Aids campus community on special projects/needs as requested or appropriate. • In support of Berea College’s great commitments this position requires student supervision. The fourth great commitment is to promote learning and serving in community through the student labor program, honoring the dignity and utility of all work, mental and manual, and taking pride in work well done. The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed. Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome.
