Organizational Unit Overview:
The College of Health and Human Performance provides instruction, conducts research, and performs service in health education and promotion, kinesiology, human development and family science, social work, interior design and merchandising, and recreation sciences. The primary focus of the college is to advance and disseminate knowledge concerning maintenance and enhancement of health and quality of life.
Job Duties:
In relation to research, the Department of Kinesiology is currently conducting an ongoing NIH-sponsored project entitled, 'Effect of Maternal Exercise in Women with Obesity on Offspring Mesenchymal Stem Cell Metabolism'. The project is quite complex, and this Research Associate position primarily involves planning and directing the project in relation to collection and maintenance of the primary human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells. The Research Associate with interact closely with Dr. Nicholas Broskey, the PI of the project and Dr. Donghai Zheng who oversees the biochemical aspects. The duties will occur primarily in the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Center (ECDOI) located on the 4th floor of the East Carolina Heart Institute Building.
Data Integrity and Interpretation - 30% The Research Associate will plan and direct the project in relation to the collection and maintenance of the stem cells. The position will also involve database organization and maintenance, which includes collating data in Excel Spreadsheets, and presenting the data in table and figure form. Lastly, the Research Associate will be responsible for tracking and keeping inventory of laboratory supplies as well as preparation of media and other recipes needed for ongoing experiments. Laboratory/Clinical Research - 70% The Research Associate will conduct placental and umbilical cord collection. These procedures involve being able to raise the cells in culture and then perform numerous steps in maintenance, differentiation, and freezing down. The Research Associate will need to conduct these procedures with a high degree of rigor and accuracy, particularly as the tissue examined is from human research participants and is available in a very limited amount.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Relevant Masters degree; or relevant BS/BA with three years of relevant work experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Masters degree in exercise science or related field is preferred. Experience conducting bench top biochemical/analytical techniques and/or involvement in research studies.
